I am listening to Jagmohan ji from age of 10-12 years. His songs used to play on Radio Cylone. Then, I could not understand the meaning of such poetry. But it took profound meaning when I reached 16-17 years of age. The age of instant loves, heart breaks and deep silences. Still, his deep sonorous voice carries me back to my childhood and young days. He was and still is one of the greatest singers India has produced.
(LYRICS WITH TRANSLATION) I HAVE RECOMPILED IT ON MADHUBALA AND DILIP KUMAR. VERY FEW SING FROM THEIR HEARTS, BUT NO ONE SINGS FROM HIS SOUL LIKE SINGING OF JAGMOHAN.
Think of music created by Kamal Dasgupta that's nothing
short of magic, and a poetry of Fayyaz Hashmi that a queer mix of Hindi and
Urdu. Think of the voice of Sursagar that kept listeners glued to the radio for
hours together, and his songs made such super hits. Truly an ocean of rhythm. A
pulsating soft and sensuous voice and that depth that reaches out to the
innermost recesses of soul.
THE LYRICS AND TRANSLATION OF THE GEET ARE:
دل کو ہے تم سے پیار کیوں
dil ko hai tumse pyar kyuN
(why my heart loves you!)
yeh na bata sakunga main
yeh na bata sakunga main
(this, I cannot tell you!)
dil ko hai tumse pyar kyuN, pyar kyuN
pehle milan ki chhaooN meiN
(under the shades of our first meeting!)
tumse tumhare gaooN meiN
(with you, in your village,
aankheiN hui thi char kyuN
why our eyes got knotted with each other!)
yeh na bata sakunga meiN
(This, I cannot tell you!)
dil ko hai tumse pyar kyuN, pyar kyuN
tumko nazar meiN rakh liya
(I have kept you in my eyes!)
dil meiN jigar meiN rakh liya
(I have kept you in my heart and mind!)
khud maiN hoowa shikar kyuN
(why, I myself fell into a prey!)
yeh na bata sakunga maiN
(This, I cannot tell you!)
roop ki kuch kami nahiN
(There is no dearth of beauty!)
duniya meiN ek tum hi nahiN
(you are not the only (beauty) in the world!
par maiN tumhari yaad meiN
(but, in your remembrance,
rehta hoon bekaraar kyuN!
rehta hoon bekaraar kyuN!
Why, I remain so restless about you!)
yeh na bata sakunga maiN
(This, I cannot tell you!)
par maiN tumhari yaad meiN
rahta hoon bekaraar kyuN
yeh na bata sakunga maiN
yeh na bata sakunga maiN
dil ko hai tumse pyar kyuN, pyar kyuN
This is my 4th compilation on marvelous combination of
Jagmohan and Kamal Dasgupta who produced such wonderful and fantastic songs.
Jagmohan was a marvel with a most melodious and sweetest voice. Fayyaz Hashmi
wrote these unmatchable subtle lyrics.
VERY FEW SING FROM THEIR HEARTS, BUT NO ONE SINGS FROM HIS SOUL LIKE SINGING OF JAGMOHAN. The era of Saigal, Jagmohan, and Pankaj Mullick was especially sweet because singers rendered their songs with minimal orchestral support. We hear their voices virtually as neat as new and pure crystals.

Jagmohan had been out
of attention for years, by creating videos on his songs, I am trying to bring
this great singer into limelight and revive his greatness. Jagmohan had a different type of singing. He never tried to copy any body. He sang mostly or rather non-filmy geets which none else could match. I started listening him when I was hardly 14 and today I am 72 and one can very well understand the impact and melody.
Jagmohan - a voice that kept listeners glued to the radio
Ceylon for hours together, and his songs made super hits in the past. A
pulsating soft and sensuous voice and that depth that reaches out to the
innermost recesses of soul. I still remember listening to Jagmohan in the dead
of the night on Radio Ceylon in my school-days. His voice would come shimmering
like waves of ocean in that stillness of night

Jaganmoy Mitra (his original name) was born in 1918, became
Jagmohan when Gandhiji gave him this name. His songs were played from the Red
Fort. Tagore associated Jagmohan with composing the music of "Jana Gana
Mana...
In fifties, Jagmohan's voice glued millions under its spell
on radio Ceylon. Think sheer of the flowing poetry, think of an enchanted
evening with your beloved, cups of wine, and you and your love under a star
shrouded sky.
His unique style of singing brought him the title of
'Sursagar' in 1945. Before him, only Pankaj Mullick was honored with this
title. Tagore songs and lyrics of Nazrul Islam sung by Jagmohan made his name a
household word in Bengal. He was equally famous for his songs in Hindi, Gujrati
and Marathi. In a career over spanning over 40 years, he has recorded over 400
songs.
His romantic and love songs that were distinct by marvelous
combination of poetic lyric and melodious tunes. Besides, songs of patriotic
zeal, he also excelled in singing romantic songs.
He died at the age of 85 at his residence in Bombay.
